Welcome to the Friends of Portage Lakes State Park!
The Friends of Portage Lakes State Park is organized to foster a partnership between outdoor enthusiasts and Portage Lakes State Park that ensures a better place for nature and wildlife education, while setting high conservation standards, and raising a strong sense of responsibility for future generations.
The next Friends of Portage Lakes State Park General Membership Meeting will be February 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM, Portage Lakes Kiwanis Civic Center, 725 Portage Lakes Drive, Akron, Ohio 44319. All meetings are free and open to the public!
Join us as we learn about attracting Ohio's native flora and fauna. This meeting will give you a new appreciation of the natural world, and how much wild creatures need backyard habitats that mimic the disappearing wild. You'll learn how you can adjust your planting palette to be both beautiful and environmentally useful. We'll discuss Doug Tallamy's book Bringing Nature Home. Tallamy recognizes habitat destruction and the resultant species loss and turns them into inspiring stories full of hope and opportunity. He suggests how individual gardeners, collectively, can protect and conserve the local biological diversity that is truly vital and irreplaceable.
